STP oil filter s6607 <-- Not for the 4.0L

Postby jrjohn77 » Sun Nov 11, 2012 4:28 pm

I purchased the Castrol Oil and STP Filter combo for $21.99 from AutoZone. Their computer says that STP oil filter s6607 is the filter needed for our 4.0L engines. This filter is a good 1" shorted than the proper filter. Research online says that the s6607 filter is for the Altima or Mazda Protege. AutoZone swapped it for the proper sized FRAM without any fees or issues. Just a heads up.

An Oil filter is one of the most important maintenance parts for any car, so getting the right one is important. Wondering is there any larger oil filters out there that will fit the PF? I used to use a different filter other than the one called for on a 93 Suburban, it was 3" longer than the factory filter. It did a great job for 154,000 miles and a lot of that was towing a 30' travel trailer.

I have always used the Fram 7317; but always thought the filter was really small to begin with from factory.

Thanks, I'll look into that when time for my first oil change.

Same here, I always thought that the filter for the 4.0 was really small from the factory. I've seen a lot of engines and lots of filters and this one just makes me question the engineering.

Oil sampling seems to be coming back fine up to 10k miles. Perhaps if you wanted to hit 12k-15k miles on a change it might be necessary, otherwise it doesn't seem warranted.

The PH 7317 is the same filter as used on the 06-present Honda Civic with a 1.8L engine. I've always thought this kind of ridiculous, but also haven't had any filtration related issues on my pathy at 125k miles.

Ask the AutoZone person to show you the FRAM or any other brand equilivant filter and the answer is obvious. I'm not an engineer, but I think the larger filter is the wiser choice. As I posted earlier, they swapped the STP for the FRAM without any headache or upcharges.

While the filter may be small, the bigger concern would be that if you have enough debris in your oil to clog it, then you have bigger problems than just the size of the filter! The one advantage of a larger filter is that it will increase your oil capacity slightly. Outside of that, there is no real benefit. Filter construction of the brand of filter one purchases should be more of a concern than the size. I always liked this site about oil filters:
