Our Pathfinder and Travel Trailer

Postby speedline » Sun Apr 13, 2008 9:27 pm

I will be doing a before and after with the AirLift rear bags installed. Here are some pictures without the rear bags. These pictures are without our 3 kids in the back and us adults. Also no cargo in the Pathfinder at all. The trailer does have cargo including holding tanks 3/4 full and fresh water 1/2 full.

I will post pictures of the AirLift bags once installed.

One of the things about heavy towing that I've learned over the years is to protect the rads best as possible.

From the spacings in the photo's it appears that your truck's rear end is sagging in relation to the front.

Just an aside question did you remove the trucks spare tire and put it in the trailer?

Happy touring. :)

What's the tongue weight and the total trailer weight? I see you already have a weight distributing hitch. I'm surprised it didn't help level it more.

I never did tow without the air bags as the springs were so soft, I didn't think they would handle a trailer. Ours is only a 2,000lb tent trailer with a 240lb. tongue weight.

No, I left the spare tire on the Path. It will likely stay there for good. Weight on the trailer is 3000lbs dry and 3500lbs with full water/holding tanks. Without the weight distributing hitch the Pathfinder sags even more. I could sinch up the chains on the hitch one more level as well to even it out more.

So now onto the AirLife bags. Will these really stiffen up the rear end. I find the Pathfinder is quite bouncy while towing, compared to my Chevy 2500 truck, obviously. I am hoping the rear bags help out alot.

Since I have yet to tow anything, I won't presume anything. But, I would like to say that if those pictures are from where you live, then I officially hate you :) Beautiful surroundings!

They do help out quite a bit. Our trailer is lighter that yours, obviously. We had the Pathfinder loaded to the ceiling with stuff and it didn't bottom and towed very steady. I had inflated the bags to 30psi.

It's great having them the rest of the time, too. What's great is that they are adjustable, unlike the old bolt on leaf style helper springs, so you don't get a stiff ride unloaded. At about $80, it's a cheap and worthwhile upgrade.

The Airlift bags are the only way to go if you are going to do any towing with the PF. I have found that even putting a 4 bike hitch mounted rack on the back, with 4 people, and some supplies that the rear end sags.

So I installed the airlift bags today. I didn't take any pictures because the install was very simple and easy. Now I have driven the Path around town with 20psi in the bags and the rear end is much softer than before. Also the rear end is definately up higher than before which is going to be a plus when we put the 3 kids in there and the trailer.

I am going to hook my trailer up this weekend and take some pictures of the comparison.

So far so good.

Got it off of ebay for $70 plus shipping, cheapest I found. Was delivered in less than a week.

These will do, right?

I know little about cars, but there will be towing this summer and I want to be prepared :p (and a couple of buddies of mine can help install)

Edit:
okay, I need help to find someone willing to send internationally, ebay will work for me... :)

I have the Firestone airbags on my 2007 2WD. When towing my TT (400 lb tongue weight with a dead weight hitch), the difference is amazing. No more sag, no bouncing and as an added bonus, stuff in the cabinets in the trailer doesn't get tumbled around any more. Get them!

Speeline - I have pretty much the same size trailer as you, same color Pathy too. Around 3200 dry about 450 tongue weight. When I first bought it I didn't have the airlift 1000 and the ride was very bouncy. I noticed a huge difference after I installed the airbags kit. It was awesome, you don't bounce. It also helped to keep the rear end up. Filled around 35psi. Just awesome.
All I need now is some bigger side mirrors for towing. If you can find out where to get some, let me know. Thanks.
