1st mod!!! Stant 10504 Locking Fuel Cap

Postby impulsepath » Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:33 am

I installed a locking fuel cap on my 2012 Pathy. It is Stant 10504 model.
It seals well, no codes thrown. Locks and unlocks as it is supposed to.
The fuel door would not close completely flush with the body so I had to bend one of the fuel cap holder fingers in a bit. It did not require much bending, maybe 1/4 inch. Stant fuel cap is taller than the stock one and it interferes with the fuel door.

I popped the stock fuel cap out of its plastic retainer ring and stuffed the ring and the plastic cable inside the back of the fuel door. This way I can go back to stock if I need to. I did not want to mess with the plastic rivet at the end of the retainer cable.

Hopefully this will do more than just keep honest people honest and be somewhat of a deterrent...

Drawbacks are that you have to keep track of an extra key and that the fuel cap is not tethered inside the fuel door.

$13.49 on amazon.

On my 06, the fuel lid door locks automatically when the doors are locked, so there's not really a need for a locking cap. Isn't it the same on the 2012 model?

Not on my 2012 Pathfinder S 4WD. Fuel door does not lock, it is manual.

Yep, that was one of the features that they cheaped out on in later models. Limited to the LE.

It confuses the hell out of the gas-jockeys, 'Can you please pop your fuel door?' and I show them you just have to push on it...

The 06 fuel lid is manual, too; you have to push on it to open it. But, if you lock all the doors and try to push on it, it won't open.

I have a 2011 LE and the gas door is non locking. Unlike previous years, the gas door is not completely flat, mine has a small bump, for a finger hold.

smj999smj, think stone age, the fuel door is just a dumb flap. no lock or smarts of any sort. it has sort of a notch to put your finger in and open it.
whoever wants to help themselves to gas in the tank is free to do so, just open the flap, remove the cap and siphon away. :) I don't know how easy it is to siphon gas from this tank... I live across the road from a big high school and a locking gas cap is probably a good idea. let them siphon from somebody's car without a locking gas cap. :)

it looks like nissan cheapened many things on the last few model year Pathfinders. How do you make more money off an existing product? charge more for it which is not an option or charge the same amount but remove a bunch of things from the product. Nissan decided on the latter.
even the roof rail Pathfinder sticker fell victim to this. :)

My buddy used to live in Philly. If you used a locking gas cap, they just punched a hole in your tank and got the gas that way.

Too bad they did away with it. Was a good idea while it lasted! Also, one of the few things that hasn't had any problems...yet!

Is it possible to make my manual fuel door to become this fancy 'push in to open' type?
