Yup, exactly. Surge brakes don't need electrical help, but they are normally only used on boat trailers because electric brakes don't like to get wet

Air Lift 1000

Postby Stealth » Tue Sep 23, 2008 9:43 am

Purchased the Air Lift 1000 and it's en route. Should be here tomorrow (I hope). Does it come with everything that you did in your installation??? Hose clamps, the y (for 2 to 1 air line), the shroeder valve?

Great post - You made it simple for the rest of us. The break controller is in already and the 7-pin harness should also be here tomorrow.

Camping trip this weekend is pending parts and installation!!!!!

Already bought my air lift kit. Now, just waiting to see what kind of trailer I end up with before buying the rest. Great thread!

Carl, can you give me some feedback on what it is like to tow a car with the pathfinder (keep in mind I bought the V8 with 7500# tow capacity for this reason)? I am kinda thinking that it might be a bit light for a 1500# trailer and 3500# car but maybe I am wrong. Of course, I'll also have a bunch of tools and spare tires (maybe an extra 1000# or so but still well below 7500# I think). I also bought the air lift kit but do you think I'll need the weight distributing hitch with anti-sway as well or will std hitch be fine?

Basically, I was debating between the '08 PF and the '08 Sequoia (9,100# tow capacity) and am wondering if the Sequoia would have been overkill for what I plan to tow? I got the PF for $350/mo less over 5 yrs as well, which equates to $18k over 5 yrs and weighed heavily in my decision. I am second guessing my decision though so I am looking to confirm that I made the right choice, or at least an acceptable choice based on my towing needs. ;)

Cheers, JC

PS (Edit) - my Subaru WRX weighs about the same as the 300ZX in your first post.

I towed about 5500lbs, car & trailer, plus easily 1K lbs of tools, with just the stock hardware and good electric brakes, no problem. Been a while since I've towed that stuff, but it worked just fine when I did.

I installed the 7-pin harness a few weeks ago along with the air bags and I just remembered that there was an extra connector on it that didn't seem to connect to anything else. Anyone know what that is? I have an 08 V8. Thanks, JC

I plan on towing my Evo up to Romulus, NY for the Finger Lakes SCCA National Tour in June with our R51 ('08 V6). Thanks for the awesome right up as I had no idea how easy it was to get the R51 ready for this trip.

One question I do have is do I need this - Electric Brake Wiring Harness? Per Courtesy it looks as though its required when installing a trailer brake controller.

I was initially concerned with how close I'll be to the 5k tow capacity but, it looks like some of you guys have hauled more than that with no problems.

Nevermind, I didn't notice the harness was already listed in your parts list

For 05-07 Yes. Probably for 08 but I don't know enough about them to be definitive. That harness plugs into the under-dash socket and provides you wires to hook into your brake controller. Just peek under your dash and you'll see the connector.

**you beat me to your own question**

I don't think you NEED it but then you'd have to hack into the stock harness to install a brake controller. This way of you want to remove the brake controller, you simply unplug everything. Much cleaner.

I just installed mine tonight getting ready to pick up my trailer this weekend and there were no extra connectors. My harness had 2 connectors.... one that replaced the one that the 4-pin harness was using, and one that plugged in right above that into another socket that had a dummy plugu filling it (I'm assuming to keep corrosion out?). No extras though.

For those talking about the brake controller harness, I just returned my Nissan part today. It comes with the Nissan plug at one end, and care wires at the other. If you're getting a Prodigy controller, Tekonsha make a harness that is designed to be Nissan/Prodigy, so there is no splicing necessary. I got mine at Camping World, and it was about $5 cheaper than the Nissan part.

The pathys got a 6k towing capacity so i think you should be well within the limit[/quote]
