is a tranny change really the only fix for the contaminated fluid?
wouldn't a few spill and fills fix the prob?

ok. here it is. about three weeks ago my wife said that something was wrong with a tire. rumble strip sound. (we know where this is headed now right). I did the cooler/prewarmer bypass and did a spill & fill with the fluid. it wasn't pink, bbut it was a chocolate red color. Wichita I here is the better of the two. refilled and will put about 150 miles on it, then spill & fill again. as long as I'm not wasting my time, I will do this a few times to try to get good fluid back in. might even try some seafoam tranny conditioner to help get all of the moisture out. I figure six spills and I can still be
cheaper than the dealership price. as long as there is some hope of it working. but yes, tranny still operates fine and shifts fine. just an occational growl or like you are driving over a rumble strip.

A "strawberry milkshake" appearance indicates probable coolant contamination

well, it wasn't what I'd call strawberry milkshake. it was still a dark red. just not clear. looked cloudy. I just did my second spill & fill with half a pint of seafoam trans tune. can says it removes moisture and cleans and dries hydraulics. there seafoam injector and engine treatment works well so we will see. I'm using a castrol universal for the flushes then if that works well I'll change it to royal purple or Lucas. I just hope this works.

I noticed that the rumble sound only happened while "cruising", by that I mean 45mph and up at 1200rpms. I finally got fed up and took it into the dealership to get it checked out. Turns out my tranny is F####D. I just found that out today and I bought the PF seven months ago. I talked and pleaded to the dealer, and they seemed to have been very willing to help me out. They did a bunch of research into costs and availability and it turns out that they will get me a rebuilt transmission with a 3 year warranty and install it for $1200 as a sign of good will. The actual cost of the new tranny and labour is roughly $3500.
My symptoms are very similar to yours. Fortunately my dealership, Jonker Nissan in Surrey, BC, Canada is awesome. The guys there wanna help you and they treat me and my kids like family. They went out of their way to find an affordable solution to this issue and the only "GOOD" thing is that the cost is minimal compared to what it could be. As soon as the new tranny is in, it's bypass time.

thanks spicoli. ha "my dad's a tv repair man, he has an ultimate set of tools. we can fix it". I wish I could feel that way about the stealerships arround here but I can't. they didn't even get the IPDM issue we had. all they did was changed the left cat and tried to sell me a five oil change package and coolant flush. well so far I have done a spill & fill drove it 50 miles or so, then another spill & fill with seafoam trans tune( only a half a pint) and will let the wife put some longer miles on it(she's a realtor and they don't care about miles or gas prices) then I'll do another spill with the rest of the trans tune. if all works after that, I'll flush with royal purple. damn I hope it works. I just find it hard to beleve that a little coolant could screw up a tranny. I just can't get my head arround that.
not given up though. tha pathy is just about paid off and I have a 14yr old that will het a car. I'm not payin for two at the same time. gotta keep it. just rethinking the fronter for him now.
