Transmission Fluid

Postby Suliman » Fri Jun 19, 2009 8:08 pm

Anyone running anything else other than the Nissan Matic J stuff in their PF?

I'm at 40k and I'm going to flush the transmission, transfer case, and both differentials.

I'm looking at Redline ATM.

Even more so, what are the fluid amount requirements for them?

I've spoken to a few different people about that. The local Nissan parts guy absolutely admonished me to never use anything but J Matic. Any of the other fluids are fair game, but not the transmission.

That being said, I'm a big fan of Redline. I have it in the rear end of the PF already and I use it in my Maxima and F-150 also. I'll use their stuff in the front diff and t-case of the PF eventually.

That's what I was wondering about the transmission, I'll stick to the Matic J for it then.

Looks like I'll have to track down a good source for the Nissan fluids for the transmission...

As for the differentials:
Owners Manual says 80w-90 front and 75w-90 in the rear. I'll be taking the Path to a pretty damn hot tropical climate for a few years. Will 75w-90 (like the Redline or Royal Purple 75w-90) be good front and rear for diff fluid?

As for the transfer case:
Again, Owners manual says Matic D. I'm wondering if i just get some extra bottles of Matic J, or can I use the Redline D4 ATF or Royal Purple MAX ATF fluid in there?

Those are fluids I plan to use. I have the Redline 75W90 in the rear already, which I did at 15k. I plan to put it in the front when I get to 30k.

Matic D is supposed to be compatible with Dextron. I plan on putting the Redline equivalent in the t-case at 30k.

Wow, too funny....

I just called THREE Nissan dealers in my area...

All said about 16 qts to full flush and that's where they all stopped agreeing... HAHAH!

Dealer 1: NO, MATIC J ONLY! Nothing else. The Earth will crumble with anything else.
Dealer 2: No, MATIC S, we don't use MATIC J anymore, Matic J is junk.
Dealer 3: No, you can use Matic S, but we use a comparable SYN product.

You have GOT to be kidding me!

I'm about to just say the hell with it and just use a compareable Synthetic for the Transmission, like Amsoil or something. These stealerships are killing me!

Guys: The Nissan J matic has been "up graded " ( more $$$ )
to "S".
If the car still has the power train waranty, I would stick with factory fluids.
If you have questions, call a local reputable trans shop - not AAmco !!

Just had a 4wd service and the transmission flush done by a very reputable shop, any problems with the work, they can deal with it, LOL!

Transmission: BG Sythetic ATF
Transfer Case: Dextron III
Differentials: 80w90 Valvoline

If you have a trans issue, or a rad/trans cooler issue down the road, you might get burned if you use something other than "J". Without a positive displacement flusher, you'll never EVER get 16quarts or whatever out. You'll get about 4L (1 gallon?). "j" isn't expensive anyway, CVT is like $40.00 a bottle. Don't let the trans shop tell you they have a magic additive that turns any red fluid into the fluid you need. It won't work. I've also seen the wrong fluid in the diffs/trans case cause VDC lights.

DO WHAT THE MANUAL SAYS -"J" FOR SURE!

FYI - pan removal and fluid samples are now going out for "investigation" for some repairs

Matic J drain and refill every 20,000 miles .... My Valvoline Rep. says there is not a Valvoline equivalent to the J ... The Max life is for the D , thats what I use in the Transfercase ....

They used the BG flush tool on it.

Even if I have problem down the road, it's irrelevant as far as a warranty aspect, Nissan won't do squat with it (over 40k). It's so irritating that Nissan (and all the others) pull this crap with fluids. It ILLEGAL for them to require you use their stuff (as long as there is a fluid that meets the specs).

Suliman, can you tell me anything about the fluid BG uses? I just purchased a 2007 SE with 32k mi on it and there is a sticker inside the engine compartment that indicates a transmission service at 27k mi. I assume this was for the 30k mi service but don't know for sure. I can't seem to find anything (positive or negative) about BG services.

Should I still go ahead and do a drain/fill with Matic S?

12 quarts of Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc on my 2007 pathfinder with 73500 miles. Old fluid came out dark. Runs smooth as silk. No issues.
