u1000 error code

Postby ralphwiggums » Thu Nov 04, 2010 2:04 pm

So I was off in the bush yesterday, up a trail in 4Lo working my way up a hill when I totally loose all power and the truck basically dies. Just totally looses power and won't go anywhere, the transmission indicator goes blank and Service Engine light comes on. I managed to back down a bit and get it out of 4Lo into 2wheel drive, get the truck started and work back down the trail (last thing I wanted was to be stuck 40min into the bush with no cell coverage).
got to another part of the trail where I got into 4Hi and turn around to resume my trip.

I pulled the error code this AM and it was U1000. Nothing comes up regarding it. Any ideas?

Any ideas on why the sudden loss of power and 'death' of 4Lo. I managed to make it to where I had to go and back down to the highway, and made a 200mile drive home w/o any issues, but still bugs me a bit that this happened.

That's the same error that I got when installing a fan for my 2nd tranny cooler. The spinning fan caused voltage to keep the ECM "alive" after I turned off the key. I'm not sure where I found the reference, but that code was titled something like "general communication error". I changed my wiring, cleared the code, and it never returned.

I don't have an answer why yours would have given you the code. Since you were off road, could the battery have shorted against the hood? Perhaps one of those big bundle of wires under the hood is not securely plugged in?

na, definitely not a wiring harness issue.

I suspect it's something transmission related. Unfortunately these new Pathfinders are all electronically 4-wheel drive vehicles. My old '95 had a true LSD and was definitely a better off-road vehicle.

Reason for suspecting transmission is that I was in 4-Lo and completely lost power. I could apply gas and the engine would rev, but it sounded like it bogged down and there was no transfer to the drivetrain. I've done the transmission bypass, so maybe the transmission fluid got too hot or something. I've cleared the code now and everything sounds/drives/shifts fine.

...back in business to scare cyclist off the roadways.... :)

Its a CAN comm. code. Control Area Network Communication. 1st priority code. 1st Check should be battery state and charging ability. Then there are a whole bunch or ground checks and comm checks between ECUs. Lemme know if you need a hand.

I think that the sudden loss have been caused by a part which malfunctioned. Let us see the pics of that pathfinder. :D

any chance this could have been the IPDM issue that seems to be popping its head up?

- sudden loss of power
- dash lights going crazy
- leaving it to cool down and chill out and then good to go again....

Has anyone received a recall letter for the IPDM relay yet?

My dealer told me yesterday that the recall/warranty ext. should happen in Dec.

If you were in brush, check that none of your harnesses got unplugged under the truck. Just talked to a buddy with a Titan, his diff locker harness got pulled off when he was offroading. Didn't cause a communication error, but his diff lock won't work anymore.

no, wasn't a harness coming unplugged.

I was on a fire-road/trail in 4-lo. While it was friggin lumpy and covered in snow/ice, it wasn't like I was actually going through trees and brush.

Hasn't come back, so I'm just going to write it off as the transmission was getting too hot or something.

But after everything that is going wrong with these vehicles, I'll NEVER buy another Nissan.

Mine threw a U1000 code this morning after pulling a trailer

Postby Titus_RacerX » Sun Jul 19, 2015 11:49 am

I towed a utility trailer from A to B. I hope the trailer lights didn't have anything to do with it. Now, checking grounds.

Hello code again. Now Nissan wants to replace the transmission. Aamco confirms that the U1000 code is an electrical error. We're about to miss a vacation in D.C. because of incompetence from my Nissan dealer.

Your Pathy has a number of different control units, obviously, including the ECM, TCM, 4WD control unit, BCM, IDPM/ER, etc. The control units in your Pathy have a networking system accomplished through a pair of wires twisted together, routed throughout the vehicle, that allows them all to "talk" to each other. This is known as "CAN," or controlled area network, which is used on most late model vehicles. The system eliminates a lot of wiring throughout the vehicle.
U1000 is a CAN communication error code, meaning that one or more of the control units are not or unable to "talk" to each other. Ground issues have been a common cause of these in many Nissan models and cleaning them can sometimes correct the issue. There was a technical service bulletin, NTB06-009a, on the issue, which you can download here:

http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/local_li ... &keyid=112

I have a 2006 LE which had a CAN comm code several years ago and while it did not exactly meet the criteria per the TSB, I followed it and it did fix the problem. That doesn't necessarily mean it will fix yours, but worth mentioning.
Often these codes are caused by a faulty control unit, but an open or shorted communication wire or a poor connection at a harness connector in the communication circuit can cause the code to trigger. A capable scan tool is practically essential when diagnosing this problem as one of the things that needs to be done is accessing all of the various control modules and checking for codes related to communication for the CAN system. It's not always an easy problem to fix, especially if one has not worked much with CAN system problems.

Dealer wants to put a new trans in my Pathfinder.

Postby Titus_RacerX » Wed Jul 13, 2016 3:23 am

"...back in business to scare cyclist off the roadways.... Smile" As a cyclist, I don't see one ounce of humor in your statement. You're just a hater.

We left the vehicle with the dealer while on a one week vacation to D.C. The dealer had the vehicle for almost two weeks.

So AutoNation Nissan of Marietta, GA can't figure it out even when I placed a copy of the TSB EC06-001a, dated Mar 31, 2006 on the passenger seat. They said that they took the Pathy for a test drive while towing a trailer. Again, it produced the code.

Their diagnosis was to say that when pulling a trailer the trans is overheating. I'm no detective but the last time that it produced the error code, I UNPLUGGED the trailer lights and continued just fine. Yet they refuse to understand that when ANY trailer is plugged into the harness, eventually in stop and go situations the code appears.

Aamco installed a NEW transmission in the vehicle about a year ago and stand by their U1000 code as being the problem. Not overheating!

Does my Nissan dealer just want to take my money?

Oh, and to top it off, they left the passenger side window open in a rain storm and scuffed the B pillar on the same side.

Where can I find detailed instructions to DIY service the grounds in my 2006 2WD Pathfinder? The dealer wants over $700 to do this service, but still insist the problem is overheating of the transmission.

$700?!! The TSB only calls for 0.8 hours of labor to service the grounds! The bulletin # is actually NTB06-009a (EC06-001a is the classification number). The details of what to do is in the service bulletin, which can be downloaded here for those that don't have it:

http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/local_li ... &keyid=112

The location of your grounds, as stated in the bulletin, is in the EC section of the factory service manual for your vehicle. You can download the EC (Engine Control) chapter of the 2006 Pathfinder factory service manual from here:

http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/Knowledgebase/links/75/

It's been awhile since I did this on my 2006, but I remember there being ground locations on the left and right sides of the engine compartment, behind the glove box and up on the dash support bar and behind the instrument panel area on the dash support. There might be a couple more that I've forgotten. The service manual has that info.

My Nissan Service Manager said at least 5 hours at $150/hr. I guess he was being "generous" by quoting $700 and, he didn't know that he was talking to someone that has built 13 kit cars and restored 3, working on the 4th. Who's brother owns a lube shop and has a top-shelf scan tool. I guess I should always to my own work. To their credit, they did do a good job of replacing my timing chain(s) recently and they service my Leaf. But, that's the end of my trust in them.
