I prefer the WD21's and R51's, personally. The R50's are okay; they got their pros and cons just like all of the Pathfinders.

It is more powerful than the WD21, but not more than the R51, which also has the 5 spd. AT which gives it a little better gas mileage on the highway. The R50 is not a crossover; it is an SUV with a unibody chassis, much like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The WD21 and R51 have a body on frame, which is better for towing and also makes it possible to do a body lift, if that's what one's into. I also wouldn't go as far as say the R50 handles better. It's rear suspension link setup has been problematic and even when the link bushings are good, the handling isn't all that spectacular. While the R51 does suffer from weak rear spring, it is easily corrected with a set of Bilstein HD shocks and Airlift 1000's, plus has an independent rear suspension. The ride is a bit softer in the R50 due to it's unibody. Both have check engine light issues. VQ R50s have issues with power valve screws falling into the engine; R51's have issues with the timing chain. At least the R50 doesn't have the radiator issues and you can access the fuel pump without dropping the tank, but the R50 has had issues with rust on the strut towers. As I said, both have their pros and cons. Either can be a good vehicle, but neither one is perfect.
