Losing Oil, Without a Leak....

I'm helping a friend determine a most perplexing problem. She has a 1990 4 Dr SE 4WD. Say every couple hundred miles, she has to put a half-quart of oil in. There are no leaks that I can see (or that the few auto repair places could see either). Assume that we are inspecting the vehicle only when stationary. Every time she has taken it in, they tell her, "We don't see anything wrong, just keep putting oil in it!". I really can't accept that, so I'm hoping for some insight from the power's to be - this forum!

As the engine/seals look dry and there isn't any smoke coming out of the tail pipe (thinking blow-by in th engine), I am out of ideas. Hoping that these symptoms can tip someone off on the solution. Thanks for all your help!

I'm guessing you checked around the oil pressure sensor? Is the antifreeze clean? Only thing that is coming to mind is valve seals. You will only see smoke at start up briefly if they are going bad. You should have this post in the wd21 pathfinder forum. Then you might get a little more help.

I would also put your hand on the exhaust and see if it comes away oily. Unless that pathy has had a recent engine overhaul, you could be burning the oil, I would not be surprised if thats it, they are good engines, but even they get tired and worn out.
