2001 Le entertainment system to DVD

I'm picking up a 2001 Pathy tomorrow and it has the stock flip down screen but it is connected to a VHS player in the back as opposed to a DVD player.
Does anyone know if I can connect a DVD player to the VHS player using Audio/Video cables so that I can play DVD's through the system instead of VHS?
