lost dvd remote

We bought our used 08 pathfinder with DVD system already installed. I didn't realize at the time that we needed a remote and it didn't come with it. I found some on ebay but they are very expensive. Do I have to have a remote to operate it? If so, can I buy a universal remote that might be compatible?
