Power Steering 'jerky'

Hi all. Last night and again this morning my '05 PF exhibited a weird steering issue for about 30 seconds after starting the engine. Basically whether at standstill or moving slowly the steering became what I can only describe as jerky, i.e. it felt as if the power steering was turning on/off/on/off/on etc. in quick succession. Once I get moving it stops doing this and works normally again.

I've looked through the older posts and can't find anything that describes this problem. My steering wheel isn't loose, and there's no audible noise coming from the column or from up front. I've checked the fluid level and it's sitting at max, so no fluid leakage.

Could it be the pump is on it's way out? Is that an easy fix??

Any other words of wisdom appreciated as I'd hate for the steering to fail whilst travelling at speed!

thanks.

Sounds like you might be on the right track. Here's what I'd do (in this order):
1. Check fluid level
2. Flush fluid and bleed system
3. Listen for strange noises (loud, whiny pump, swishing)
4. Have the pump diagnosed

I've never replaced one on the pathfinder but I did one on an old Volvo and it wasn't too bad.

You mean 'belt' slip I presume? I did read a post elsewhere that mentioned power steering belt tensioner....not sure where that is though :(

I have this exact problem also.
On a 2007 UK pathfinder.
Only at stand still or very low speeds. I'm assuming its the belt. Going to get it sorted ASAP

Mine seems to to have sorted itself out, but if plays up again I'll take in. Like you Pip, it only occurred at standstill or low speeds.

Keep me posted!

cheers.
