DIY: Rear Differential Fluid

I wanted to help in the DIY department. I didn't find very many DIY's on this forum. I hope this helps others save money and learn a little about their truck.

Performed on a 2008 Pathfinder LE V8 4WD.

Things to note before you start:

-Estimated time to complete: 30-45min

-Fluid Capacity 3.75 pints (1.9 US quarts)

-Fluid Type: 75w-90 Synthetic GL-5 Gear Oil

-You shouldn't need to lift your pathfinder to complete this, however, you should have the car on level ground.

-Fluid doesn't have to be hot/warm but will drain smoother and possibly get a touch more out then if cold.

Getting Started:

1: Locate your fill and drain Plug

2: Remove the FILL PLUG first.

3: Remove the Drain Plug.

4: Allow fluid to drain until there is just a slow drip or has completely stopped.
Image

5: Wipe off Drain plug. (there will be some gunk on the plug as it is magnetic, this is normal, just wipe clean to look like picture)
Image

6: Remove old washers from the drain and fill plugs and replace with new washers (you can reuse the old washers however, I am replacing mine and would suggest the same as its only a couple bucks)
Image

7: Once fluid has stopped draining. Insert Drain plug and tighten

8: Start Pumping fluid into the fill hole. (I use a standard hand pump you can find at almost any local auto part store.)
Image

9: Once the fluid has started to come back out the fill hole then the differential is full, remove the tube and insert the fill plug and tighten.

10: Clean up any mess you have made. You are complete.[/b]

How do I know if I should perform this on my Pathfinder? What is the benefit?

I have 127k miles on my 05. Bought it with 120k

if this is not done the oil will break down and destroy the differential.

Correct washer?
yes, one for the drain plug, and one for the filler plug

You gotta be in some pretty extreme circumstances to break down gear oil!

no really. it can happen especially when i's not serviced. i had the rear diff in my 4runner f- up by a family member who never chaged the fluid. so i take precaution and change the fluid every 30k. that diff cost me almost a grand when it happened.

good write up! I am approaching 200K Miles without any differential issues. It was filled with synthetic from the factory so change intervals are not that frequently necessary. Maybe next month in my to do list.lol

How do you know it was the fluid that caused it to fail and not just a mechanical failure of the differential? There are a lot of vehicles on the round with hundreds of thousands of miles on their original gear oil with no problems. Nissan doesn't even have a service interval for diff oil replacement on the R51's.

The oil used in the differentials is really close to the stuff we use in ship propeller assemblies and ski lifts use at both ends. As in its intended for severe use and to possibly never be changed. Not only is it extremely high viscosity but it's also chock full of water absorbing polymers and other things well beyond what you get in motor oil or transmission fluid.

Typically gears, bearings, and oil are all specified and designed together to meet the use case...

They might not have a specified mileage for it to be changed in the manual, but i was told by Nissan its recommend to be changed every 60k under normal driving conditions?

Also, to those interested I'll have a DIY for the "front differential and Transfer case" fluids soon. i havent had a chance to get the pictures off my phone.

It's 45,000 miles

That being said most people never change it...
