Rear whine after fluid change

I changed the fluid with Advance Auto 75w-90 synthetic fluid, putting almost two bottles in the diff. Has 78,500 miles on it. At lower speed I am hearing a whine from the rear now. Should I have used a thicker fluid? It has the diff cover with fins on it, so is that an offroad diff? How can I tell for sure. Thanks

with 2qt in there it shouldn't be whining, but did you keep filling until it started to spill out of the filling hole? Otherwise it may not be full. If you aren't using a fluid transfer pump, its possible some of the fluid may have spilt and not made it into the diff.
All of the diffs have fins on them. Doesn't indicate anything regarding 'off road', its just how they're made.

the service manual indicates approx. 3 pints of fluid
this would be for any year/model R51 OEM diff

When I filled it, the fluid started to drip out of the fill hole so I stopped and put the cap back on. I will go back and check the fluid to see if maybe it needs a bit more.

depnending on how fast you filled, and whether the breather tube is blocked, you could have ended up with air bubbles that have now settled at the top.
Definitely check your level again and refill as necessary.

were the two bottles you put in quart bottles?
if so, you should be overfilled by approx. 1 pint
