Can you shift a 2012 Pathfinder into 4x4 high in reverse? At times I will be in my garage in 2wd and need to back out after getting big snow over night so it would be good if I can shift into 4x4 high in reverse. My PF is a basic "S" model with no auto mode in the transfer case. Also is it ok to disengage the transfer case in reverse?

If you are asking about actually changing mode while driving in reverse, the answer is NO (...or at least NOT recommended), because while changing to 4LO vehicle needs to be stopped, shifter in P or Neutral position and brake pedal depressed.
But if you are asking to drive in reverse, answer is YES, of course and in ANY 2WD or 4WD mode.

The only difference in driving forward or reverse in ANY mode is a slightly different gear ratio, where 1st forward gear is a bit slower (higher ratio) than reverse gear.

Yes you can shift to 4x4 in the garage. First place the trans in (N) then turn the switch for 4x4 hi then place the trans in what gear (R) (D) what ever, let the PF roll for a foot or two this will allow any gears to mesh. It will also work for 4x4Low.

What I do is place it in 4WD and back into the garage when I know a snow storm is coming.

I call it "Prepare for running" parking style  and, of course, I park in reverse always.
