How is the quality with Nissan engine air filters? My 2012 had a Fram when I bought it and once we get out of this Northeast cold snap I will most likely be ready for a new one? Are the R51 Pathfinder Nissan factory filters oil covered or dry?

I've not tried any aftermarket filters, but I know from my experience in the motorcycle industry that many aftermarket filters seal up poorly around the edges where they should not allow any unfiltered air past them.
The Nissan filters are dry.
My intake ducts and MAF are always clean & dry.
I replace the air filters every 12K-14K.
The ones just installed cost me $17.78 each.

I usually use NAPA gold filters. My oil analysis comes back good so it appears to be filtering well. I don't remember the cost but they're more convenient to buy from than the dealer.

All Nissan factory filters are "dry." The ones from the factory on the R51's are very similar to Frams. I've used Purolator, Wix and Beck-Arnley and never had any problems with any of them.

I have a question related to this topic. Does the MAF get affected by air filters that have a metal frame at all? During my last oil change at one of my local dealers, the mechanic advised me that using an air filter with a metal frame causes havoc or what not with the MAF. They offered to replace mine but I declined as I am obviously able to install a new one myself. Has anyone else had any experience with that, or has the dealer or any other mechanic told you something similar?

I find it real strange that a metal frame would cause issue with the MAF?? I did hear that two much oil on an air filter one that has oil anyway can cause some issue that is if the filter is over oiled.

Ask for the "Value" air filters at Nissan; they are a cheaper alternative to their OEM. I've been using them and seem fine
