The Nissan Path

I have noticed with my 2012 V6 Pathy that when I'm on the gas say passing someone that once the revs go past somewhere around 3,000-3,500 RPM the motor seems to come more alive and rev faster? Is this the variable valve timing adjusting? Or what?
