Talking to a Nissan Frontier owner and....

Today I parked next to a Nissan Frontier owner and we got to talking about the similar features between my 2012 Pathy and his 2013 Fronty and also some common weird things and he asked me if I get any start up "rattle' with the 4.0 V6? I said sometimes I do but not always? so now I am wondering.... How many of you with the 4.0 V6 get start up rattle or chatter when you first start up your truck when sitting overnight? I am guessing its the timing chain crying for some oil at start up? Mine seems to not care what oil filter I use it will still make some noise not every cold start but say 75% of the time. Does not seem to effect the lifespan of the 4.0 the motor overall seems to last.

Fresh oil change. No sound at start up. Time for oil change, every cold start-up

Doubt its timing chain, more likely lifters dry and pressurized.

Since the tensioners are all oil fed, it's not uncommon to here a little rattle every now and then after a long sit. I wouldn't be worried about it.

"Doubt its timing chain, more likely lifters dry and pressurized."
-VQ engines have solid lifters, not hydraulic.

I agree.

I've had both a VQ30 and VQ35 and they both do that a bit when first started. I'm sure the same can be said for the VQ40.

VK56 doesn't seem to do it at all so far (90k).

My V8 started doing it right around 100K. Lasts about two seconds and does it every cold start.

My VQ40 is rock solid at 162k miles. We bought it at 60k miles, and to be honest, I have not babied it at all. She still loves to scream! :)
