so I have a loud humming noise coming from under the truck. 2006 4x4.
The other day i got in the back while it was moving and it was way louder and seems to be coming from the rear drivers side.
The noise gets louder with speed but does not seem to have any bearing on the tranny which is good.
There is no noticeable or prevalent vibration. I dont think its the tranny or engine at all. The fact that it seems to be on one side more than the other and not vibrating very much at all makes me think its not something hard bolted to the truck so my thinking is that it might be the bearing or axle or something.

anyone have any experience with this?

Sounds simple but have you checked your tires? Rotate them and see if the sound moves. Check the hubs while you have the truck jacked up.

what should i look for in the tire?

Look for uneven wear. Particularly cupping http://www.procarcare.com/includes/cont ... ewear.html.

Tire cupping is one of the more common culprits of speed-related humming sounds and road vibrations. Unless it's really bad, it's often difficult to spot with an untrained eye. The easiest way to tell is to either rotate your tires or put on the spare.

The way to check for a bad hub (wheel bearing) is to jack the wheel up and try to move it by pushing/pulling the top and bottom of the tire. It shouldn't move at all. You can also buy a mechanic's stethoscope and listen for grinding in the bearing center as you slowly turn the wheel. I'd bet on a bad tire, though.

If you do have a link unevenly worn tire, keep in mind that something in the suspension is causing it to wear unevenly. Before you throw a new set of rubber on there, it'd be worth a once-over by a mechanic. Might be time for a new set of shocks, bushings, or just an alignment.

wicked, christmas day is my last day off then back to work for 4 days. year i got a tough schedule, 4 on 4 off. lol 12 hour shifts though.

so Wednesday i will get a chance to get a look at it more closely.

I did take a look at the tire however and couldn't spot anything wrong with it. but i could be mistaken.

So I jacked up the truck today on both sides in the rear. Turns out both rear wheel bearings are shot. Found em on rock auto. Both with shipping to Canada is $205 and that's for the hub assembly. Anyone here change emergency out themselves? Should just be a grease and bolt job, right?

There's no greasing involved as they are sealed bearings. It's pretty much a remove and bolt on operation.

Do we have rear disk and drum breaks?

It's often referred to as a "hat style" brake system, like those used on Corvettes for years. It's a disc brake system, but the parking brake uses brake shoes and the inside hub of the disc brake rotor serves as the drum for the parking brake shoes.

won't that make it harder to replace the rear hub assembly? do I have to take all then rear drum breaks apart?

If my memory serves correct, you remove the wheel, brake caliper & mount, rotor, axle nut, four bolts that attach the bearing hub to the axle housing (or, rear steering knuckle, as I refer to it) and pull off the hub assy. Reverse to install.
