R200 Rear Differential

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me out.

First off I have a 2008 V6 Pathfinder that has some work done, such as 3" lift, snorkel, bulbar, winch and 33" tires.

My problem is gearing. With the 33" tires she is somewhat sluggish particularly when I'm towing a trailer (3500lb). It is a little embarrassing when a semi over takes you on a hill.

As I understand it I can change the front gears to 4.10 BUT it is the rear that I am having problems solving.

Can I slip in a different diff such as the R230. Any and all suggestion appreciated.

Cheers

David

Unless the R230 is from overseas, and you're in AZ so no ... you’re still stuck with a 3.36 ratio (you don’t want 2.94’s). If you’re overseas, then your option is a 3.54 from the diesel version. Some people have gone a little radical and went with a hybrid R230 set-up using our diff parts and mating them using 300zx parts, but that’s a bit extreme but does allow 4.10's. Do you know your gearing right now? I’d assume it’s either 3.36 or 3.13.

Thanks NmexMAX,

The gearing is 3.36 (going by Manufactures specs).

So frustrating. Such a capable 4x4 that seems to lack gearing options. I just came across another thread after digging some more and C200K ring & pinions were mentioned.

I was hoping to have a locker (I know ARB doesn't make one for the R200) for the rear as well, but at this stage I would be jumping with joy just to get the gearing.

Oh, and thanks for replying :)

There certainly aren't many options. But yes the R&P for the C200k and R200 are the same and 3.69 gears are available for both the R180 and C200K.

Using the old equation

Needed New Gear Ratio = New Tire Size x Old Gear Ratio / Old Tire Size

Or in your case 33x3.36/31 = 3.57 so the 3.69 would be a bit steep but certainly quicker off the line and easier to tow with.

I think Nissan switched to 3.13 in 2008 but I could be wrong.

Thanks Doc, for the info.

I think you are right. I can't find the link that mentioned 3.36 when I was researching. I swear on a stack of bibles. Now I find it is 3.13 as you mentioned.

Did you ever get this finished with the locker and the 4.10? I am looking at the 3.69 setups for mine but not sure what locker cross-references with ours.

Just an update on the stock R200 David was running in his Pathfinder before he sold it.
He was running full 4.10 front and rear lockers but encountered overheating transmission problems.
I never ran into these issues in AZ but he was also pulling a small trailer up mountains.
Noticed he was running an ARB front bumper that has a smaller opening under the grill for airflow. Even though you are doing 65mph on the highway how much air does it deflect compared to OEM?

Never driven a truck with 4.10 gears but someone help me out. If the wheels are spinning slower and the transmission/transfercase are spinning faster, to me sounds like a perfect storm at low speeds.
