V8 cracked exhaust manifold

My service advisor (who was a wrench turner for a bunch of years before moving out front) at the dealership I use, heard a slight hissing coming from my engine bay when I was last in for an oil change. I couldn't hear it. Turns out 1 of the exhaust manifolds was cracked and therefore leaking. He said the catalytic converter on these V8's is bolted right to the block (something like that) and generate a bunch of heat. It was under emission warranty (8yr 80k) and they fixed it no charge to me. He said he's seen this a bit in the Titan's, but never in a V8 Pathfinder. He also said there is no way to test for it and it won't show up in diagnostics. They test by just sticking their head in both front wheel-wells with the engine running and listen.

Yup, I also got mine replaced for free as well. I think I was at 75k or so and less than 8 years old at the time.

The manifold and cat convertor are 1 piece so therefore it's covered under that emissions warranty. Good thing.

Extremely common in Titans and Armada's.

beside the hissing noise...do you experience a sudden loss in power ?

I wasn't even aware of it until he pointed it out, so I couldn't say. I've always had a great power curve with this drivetrain, so I don't recall any loss of power.

Mine made a ticking noise when cold. Both sides were cracked, which is apparently quite common. Mine didn't crack until about 125K miles. $3500 for parts and labor.

That's helpful as I'm expecting the other side to go at some point. I'll be listening for that ticking sound.
