Engine Oil for 2006 R51 Diesel Engine

Hello,

I own a 2006 R51 2.5 litter dCi Paty with 276000 km

During 15000 maintenance my mechanics put a 15w40 oil. In the owner manual the recommended engine oil is 5w30.
How bad is it.
What should I do ? replace it ? flush the engine ? replace the mechanics ?

Thanks,
Dotan

You may get less gas mileage due to the heavier weight oil, but not sure how much less. I've seen thicker oil put in kinda as a cheap fix to quiet down an noisy engine (noisy lifters mainly), but if your engine was good to begin with, I'd stick as close to the factory oil recommendations as possible. Driving on it until you need another oil change shouldn't hurt the engine though.

Why not take it back to your mechanic and have them put the correct oil in it?

For years 15w-40 was the recommended oil for Diesel engines.
I suspect this has only changed when gov't started measuring fuel economy as they often emphasize short range trips were thinner oils shine.
But I must agree with your mechanic that a Diesel motor in middle eastern climate should run 15w-40 the classic Diesel weight.

Also the UK website lists 15w-40 as the proper weight for a 2005 2.5L Diesel Pathfinder (for some reason it wont show me a 2006)
