Transmission temp guage

Since it still appears you can't get trans temp from the lower end Bluetooth scan tools and apps (not Bully Dog, etc), has anyone installed a analog/digital transmission fluid temp gauge with sensor actually at transmission? Eg, sensor thru pan or port in housing, not at the cooler. Or at least on an output line coming right off the transmission? I'm looking for ideas.
Not sure I will tackle, but thinking about it; our summers include we Colorado mountains, and pulling a 5000+ lb. boat in TX (HOT!).
