timing chain upgrade for diesel path 05>

so Ive bought a kit on ebay and i'm in the middle of changing it but the kit is not exactly the same! the chain around the crank shaft is a double link chain as best as i can describe it whereas the original chain was a single link?

I've counted the teeth on the new cog/pully and the links in chain which are the same and the original tensioners/guides are wide enough for the new chain. I guess i'm just worried that i might have clearance issues.

Can any one tell me is this some kind of upgrade or something?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The vast majority of us live in North America were diesel Pathfinders are NOT available. We have a 4.0l Gas and a 5.6l Gas engine in ours. So when 99% of us have GAS powered pathfinders, it's understandable that we may not answer you. I would try a European forum.

They are not the same parts. I would contact Nissan and see if they sold you the correct part. Also see if the part you purchased is a new part number that replaced the original part number. Good luck and hope you figure this out.

How do I tell if my '05 path is D4 or R51?

This forum has the pathfinder broken down into 3 different groups.

WD21 is the 86-95
R50 is the 96-04
R51 is the 05-New

You said D4. Personally not sure what model that refers too. However you said you have an 05 Pathfinder. If it looks anything like the picture below, I would think it's an R51. If not, look at your door frame and double check the date of manufacture. Hope this helps.

Did it come with a new double timing chain? Looks like the difference is there is 1 row of teeth on the old gear, and 2 rows on the new.

Why are you changing it?

R51 refers to the new shape body like in the picture above.
there are no "d4" engines for 05+ pathy to my knowledge.

the r51 came in:

gas: 4.0L VQ40DE V6 and 5.6L VK56DE V8
diesel: 2.5L YD25DDTi I4 and 3.0L V9X V6

jaykay, if the new cog is a double link, doesnt that mean that the chain as well as the second cog at the other end need to changed as well?

OK!!! whether or not you realise it dared3vil00, This IS feedback!!

Look, Apology's for the crack at The Nissan Path but I'm sure lots of people here have felt how frustrating it is when your motor is stripped down on your drive after 8hrs of knuckle grazing (have a go mech) only to find you have the wrong part and zero help from nissan.

So here's what I found out. R51 is the 05> pathy as well you guys know and the new kit I have is for the same. The D40 is the pathy pick up, don't know if you guys get them, there called Navara here.

What I have is an R51 pathy with a D40 engine
Or at least the wrong chain.

To summarise R51 double chain-- D40 single chain :D

Big Cheers to all you guys I'll defo be a frequent flyer on The Nissan Path!!

Glad you figured it out. We have the truck model here, but it's called the frontier

Were you able to order the correct part to put your Pathfinder back together?

Hey volvite,

Still in pieces. lookin at a forum where a company in the UK are changing the single chain for the double as it seems pretty common for this single chain to snap and wreck the engine. I'm just tryin to find out what's involved might as well do it now, given my situation.

I understand. The hard part of tearing the engine apart is already done, so why not do the upgrade and put something stronger in place instead of the same weak OEM piece. Let us know how it goes.
