2005 Transmission Flaring going in to OD BUT...

...it doesn't do it when shifted MANUALLY with the OD button on shift knob!
Flare is about 500rpm and is consistant. It won't when shifted manually but WILL when allowed to decide for itself.
Has 167000 miles on transmission with the ATF cooler failure at 88000 miles. I caught it the DAY it happened and haven't had an issue with it until now.
Seems like a sensor isn't giving the transmission computer good information for a good shift?
Ideas?
I've been looking for an excuse to drop the pan and get a look how much metal is on the magnet...
