Timing chain noise

I was wondering if any here have noticed increased engine noise over time and have had the dealership do the timing chain repairs /chain guide replacement as per the service bulletin NTB07-042 VQ40 ENGINE; BUZZING / WHINING NOISE.

Do any know if the timing chain repairs are definitive or is this something that might need to be redone periodically.

Here's the NissanHelp discussion on the timing chain topic.

What my service guy tells me is that some VQ40 engines built before 2007 year end may have this noise which shows up at about 40K kms or sometimes earlier depending on the trucks use.

Once the dealership mechanic determines that the noise is from the front timing chain Nissan has been been replacing the guides without charge, for those vehicles still under warantee and is about a 6 hr repair.

For this area anyway the timing guide change out includes a number of additionals such as free lube oil and filter, oil pan removal and cleaning, and some others. 8)

Here's a YouTube vid of an Xterra VQ40 with a whining engine noise described as: This is a 60ish second clip of the engine at different RPM's to demonstrate the sound of the cam tensioner guide going out - a metallic whine in the background. At the 40 second mark I bring it to 4,400 RPM's and then let the gas off slowly to idle at 1,200 RPM's.

Funny this should come up. I was going to call the dealer on Monday to get it in because of a noise very much like this (53k on mine). I'm glad this came up, because now I will go read the TSB and mention it to them because I was going to describe it as a sound a lot like a "twin-screw" would make...and sure enough that is the sound I hear coming from that Xterra.

Wow, either the audio is really bad on that clip, or the problem is really bad. Sounds more like a grinding/mashing sound than buzzing/whining. I'm not really sure that the clip helped me identify what to listen for.

I asked a local dealership the same question awhile back, service guy said ballpark $1200.

I felt like crying when i read this post. My pathfinder 2005 XE with 85k has this problem. Its pretty much in full effect now. Its just like the Xterra on the youtube video, if not louder. Its messing up the acceleration. The car has gotten sluggish. Its funny because I took it to the dealer a while back and they said they didn't hear the noise. I guess I will be getting robbed by the dealer once again :(

when did you take it to the dealer and at how many miles? did they document it? you may be able to fight it if you brought it in when it was under warranty, and they said nothing was wrong with it... then again, they may end up screwing you over regardless.
