I have been reading posts about how the ring gear? has been ground to allow an ARB rear locker to work in a R230 diff.

any information on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

I see you're in Australia. If that's the case and you have the 2.5 diesel. You probably already have the 3.54 gears.

If so, nothing, the RD137 will drop right in. It's the US models with the 3.36's that need the modification you speak of.

Look at these lists, and verify what you have (model differential and gears), and then see what's available.

Ok, what i have is the R230 rear diff in a petrol pathy, the gear ratio is listed at 3.357

ARB states in their application chart
RD137 does not suit ratio up to 3.36:1 due to RG offset."

It is this following comment that i am trying to get more information on.

As for the R230(V8 rear), the ring gear needs to be ground down equally on US models since the offset is incorrect and designed for 3.54 gearing, this is the RD137 model locker.

Ok, so I'm not alone then.

I need to give ARB a call on that.

My local 4x4 shop states they wont do it. I'm going to try other shops, but it would be nice to get some kind of clarification/instruction from ARB since they are the ones that modified the R230 you're talking about.

I've googled it and it seems fairly common out there on different applications.

Have been in contact with my local ARB dealer who is very helpfull, They concacted ARB's R&D section and were told that they will not be making a diff lock to suit the lower ratio R230 diffs.

Their suggestion was for me to purchase front and rear diffs from a diesel pathfinder and then i could get the diff locks i want :) Problem is i already have a diff lock in the front and to get rid of this and get 2 new diff's and lockers will be very expensive :(

Still looking for information on this (ring gear needs to be ground down equally)

There are also other articles, but I believe the key is to grin down them equally.

Do you know what model your front and rear diffs are?

(R230/M205, etc).

I'll link these threads for clarification.

Interesting combo.

Are there any junkyards in your area to scoop a 3.54 R&P? If so, let me know too!

So I spoke with ARB, and they mentioned rragpaoa's situation. He took them (ring gear and locker)to a machine shop and had them remove equal amounts of material from each component.

The shop is in California somewhere, and I believe that they still have the specs, ARB knew of the situation, but did not know which shop. Hopefully rragpaoa can chime in and hopefully he still has the shop's information and hopefully the shop still has the specs for it.

If we could get our hands on those specs, I believe we could make it work using a local shop with our R230's. Or, for me, I could send my stuff out there and have that shop do it, depending on the conflict o interest in releasing those specs. Not sure how that will work.

My front locker wont be here until in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so getting this would be sooner rather than later.
