I got a check engine light so I ran the cost and this came up.. What's next? Can I fix it myself?

Is it serious?

Basically this means that the oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter on bank 2 is detecting that the converter is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs).

A code P0430 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
- The catalytic converter is no longer functioning properly
- An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
- There is an exhaust leak

So I should just take it to the shop ah?

Are any of those options you mentioned serious or expensive to fix?

P0443 is not an oxygen sensor code, but a code for the evaporative emission system. There may be a TSB on it, but we would need to know what year you have.

You can make your trip. You will not cause any harm to anything. The evaporative emissions system is a system that stores fuel vapors in a charcoal filled canister until they can be sucked into the engine and burned, rather than have them vent directly into the atmosphere.

There is a Nissan TSB for P0443 codes stored in 2008 Pathfinders/Xterras/Frontiers/Maximas. The bulletin involves checking the ECM part number against the chart in the bulletin. If the number matches, then an updated ECM program is available to fix the problem. In most cases, you will need to take your vehicle to a Nissan dealer for the reprogram. ECM reprograms are covered under the long term emissions warranty, usually 7 yr/7000 miles or 8 yr/80000 miles depending on the emissions certification of the vehicle; some dealers will say the ECM reprogram is covered under the 3 yr/36000 mile warranty only, but they are incorrect. Labor guide time to reprogram an ECM is 0.6 hrs. Most will try to soak you for at least an hour.

Every shop has their own labor rate and amount of part mark-up...and some follow the labor guide more prudently than others.
