Tail gate open warning - tailgate is closed and tight

Basically every once and awhile I get an intermittent warning on my screen "rear hatch/tailgate ajar" that will sometimes cause the door ajar dash light to pop up. It never stays on for more than 10-20 seconds and will disappear only to reappear randomly later.
I assume its a faulty sensor? Can anyone tell me where the sensor is to hypothetically replace it?
I checked the latch on the tailgate and it seems to be tight and sturdy.
This is driving me insane as the warning notification takes up my entire screen and beeps randomly at me.
Help?
