The Nissan Path

Been looking at the clamp style that attach to the roof rack and the hitch mount style that attach to the trailer hitch. Which do you have and what do you like about it?

Ultimately I would prefer a hitch mounted rack that has the ability to swing to the side so I can still open the rear hatch, but I have not yet come across one.

It should be noted that I ski and my wife boards, so ideally I would like a system that can accommodate both at the same time.

The only thing I don't like about rear carrying is that your equipement gets absolutely filthy.

Carrying on the roof is cleaner and cheaper...

If you have longer skis, you may want to go with the Skybox 18 or 21. Both are 92" long, but the 21 is 2" higher.

Is it at all difficult to reach your gear when you park at the mountain and its snowing, windy, etc? With the relative lack of height on the Pathy it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult.

Nope, it's fairly easy. All you need to do is stand on the rear tire and you can reach everything. My friend who has a GMC Yukon Denali also has a Thule cargo box 1600, and we don't have any problems reaching for our gear either.

I ski a lot. Well, at least when there is snow (not so much this year). I totally agree with Iced on this one-put them on the roof. The bindings on skis have quite a bit of grease on them & having them subjected to hanging on the back as a dirt magnet is not something I would ever do, especially since skis aren't exactly cheap. Not to mention all the other crap that gets thrown up all over the rear of our vehicles. I have a hitch mount for bikes, but that's different since there is no snow/salt/crap on the roads when I use it.

I just got one. Got to use it last weekend

Allen Deluxe 5 Bike Hitch Rack ($99 from Amazon). It tilts back so I can still open my rear hatch.
