Another Tire Size Question!

Hello all,
I've just bought a 2012 Silver Edition and love it. Unfortunately it's going to need new tires soon which leads to my question:
The stock tires are 265/65/17, if I went with 265/70/17 tires what effect would it have on the vehicle? Will it affect the speedometer or mpg's?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

In my experience, adjusting the sidewall by 5-10 changes to speedo about 1-2 mph. But that's in a sedan on 205/50-60R16. As for mpg, a change in sidewall doesn't effect the actual contact area of the tire, but the larger sidewall creates a larger circumference (I'll leave the math out lol), so the wheel will take more effort to turn 1 full revolution. Not sure of the exact change in mpg, but the short answer is yes, a larger sidewall will decrease mpg and will show about 1-2 mph higher.

On the early R51's, I believe that was the size of the SE-OR tire. Many thought that the speedos were set up for the SE-OR tires and if you had another model with the 265/65R17 tires, the speedometer was slighty off and could be corrected by installing the larger tires. I'm not sure if that's an issue on the later R51's, however.

I found this to be a good tool-

I just did that exact switch. Went from the stock 265/65/17 to a 265/70/17 LT. The new tires are 25% heavier than the old ones since I went with the Light Truck rating to bump the sidewall thickness up from 7ply to 10ply for offroad use. I used to average 12.5 l/100km, now its at 14. Not too bad of an increase, and to me, totally worth it. :D
