I need new tires. I got my oil changed today and the tech informed me of a nail in the sidewall of my front right tire I was planning on getting tires before winter, but I guess this speeds things up a little. The tire is still holding air just fine, but I can't run on a tire with a nail in it all summer so it is time. I use my truck mostly on road and currently have 265/70r16 Goodyear Silent Armor tires. I have had great luck with these tires and am looking at getting them again in a different size.

I want to know if there are any major drawbacks to running the 285/75r16 tires. I have a 2" lift already so I should have less rub on the fenders and can do the heat gun mod if I need to. The 285's are 32.8" and the 265's are 31.7" in diameter. I know the speedo will be a little more off with the 285's, but that is not a concern.

How big of a MPG difference is there between the 2 sizes?

How much is acceleration effected by the bigger tires?

I will be moving to Colorado in the next 6 months, will I have problems with the bigger tires in the mountains on the 7% and 8% grade freeways?

I am going to go with the 265's. Without anyone to have a strong argument to go with the bigger tires I am just going to stick with what most people on here have.

I know most of you like the DuraTracks but those are a bit more agressive than what I need. I am between the GY Selient Armor and the BFG All-Terrains. I have the GY in 265/70-16 right now and they are great. I would be getting the larger size of those as a replacement vs the BFG's.

I agree with you. going to the higher profile would probably have had a pretty big effect on your fuel economy. Do you know the weight difference between 265 vs 285?

GY Silent Armors seem to be a good choice. Everyone I know that runs these are pretty happy with them, and get good treadlife.

My folks have them on their Silverado 1500, and tow a 24ft camper with it. No issues at all.

I had the Goodyears on my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee and loved them. They did great on road and did well off road too. My brother had BFGs on his surburban and once they wear down to about half, his traction suffered greatly.

The Duratracks might be more agressive, but I've found it to be a much better tire overall than the BFG AT. Biggest problem for me and the BFG was when, as volvite also mentioned, tread wear hit a bit less than 50%. The only tire I've ever hydroplaned with is the BFG, and that would be multiple times. They still seemed okay in hard packed dirt, but forget about snow. After having had them on 3 different vehicles (definitely beating a dead horse), I will never buy them again. Just my little opinion, however, as I know a lot of people who will run nothing but the BFG AT.

This seems to be a common theme with the BFG's. Great for the first year or 2, but then when they start to wear down they suck. I have had a great experience with the Selient Armors and am getting those, just the next size up to be the same as the OR pathys.
