Spare tire stolen

Had my Pathfinder's spare tire stolen at 9am on a Saturday morning right in front of my house. Was sleeping in my home because I work a night job. I heard a thump, my alarm goes off, and then a loud noise from the exhaust of what sounds like a beater truck. I was sleeping and by the time I realized that it's my alarm, they were long gone.
Called Nissan dealership and they're quoting me $960 to replace. Is spare tire theft commonplace? Any ways to prevent it via the use of locks? Would having an alarm with a proximity sensor do the trick?
I'm super pissed...
Thanks

Did they damage your truck? $960 is ridiculous. Buy a full size tire and a cheap steel rim and your good to go.
I don't see why it would have to be more than $200-300

No, all they did was push cable down and clip the chain with pliers. They stole the wheel, tire, and lifting mechanism. All I was left with was a broken chain.

Depending on how much of your chain they cut off, you probably need to lengthen it a bit. You need to replace the 'lifting mechanism'.
Maybe a wrecker?

Nissan makes a kit to prevent this. It's like a wheel lock for your spare tire.

What do they call it so, I know what to tell the dealer when I call them?
Thanks

Sorry to hear about our spare tire being stolen. Think I'll look into that spare tire lock form Nissan even though my car is kept in the garage most of the time.
