brake question

Postby tutty » Thu Oct 30, 2008 5:35 pm

hey, i have a 2007 pathfinder. dealer says its time to change my brakes, and i agree, although i only have about 27k miles on the vehicle.

anyway, dealership wanted wayyy too much. i forgot the exact number, but it was high lol. what brake pads do you folks use? are there any good aftermarket brands, and where can i get them from aside from dealership?

Interesting that your pads are worn out. I kave 38k on my '06 & still have 30 % left.
Our shop recomends Stillen rotors & akebono ceramic pads for the best stopping with no dust build up.
Pads should be available from an independent shop.

does this look real? i mean the price, doesn't it seem too low? also, 96-07 use the same pads and all?

also, i couldn't find hawk pads for 07, but did find it for an 03.. would those fit?

thanks

Here's the ERC website, some say Green Stuff 7000 series pads are great;

my apologies FoFiddy. just have one final question as i seemed to have found hawk pads for an '03 pathfinder. would those also fit an '07? they're different body styles, but another site claimed that the EBC pads can fit 96-07 pathfinders.. threw me off a bit

No worries tutty, there is a lot of bad info on the R51 Pathfinders especially with bolt pattern and offset. If you do a search for Wheel Spacers for the Path a good majority believe the Path is using the same bolt pattern in the 50 and 51... People have enough issue with getting a proper 6x4.5 rim with the right hub ring spacing let lone offset for the R51. So I wouldn't put much too much credence in that year span they put out. I checked with www.Courtesyparts.com (great parts resource)and there are about 4 or 5 different part numbers just for the front brakes from 94 to 04. Keep in mind the Pathy went from the Anemic 3.3VG to the 3.5VQ R50 and then fattened up quite a bit for the current R51 throughout that time span. Each change like that braking must be matched appropriately for engine size and weight...
The R51 is a bit of a strange duck...errr truck

i just checked courtesyparts. their brake page is confusing lol. i'm not sure if i need the PAD KIT or the HARDWARE KIT lol.

i've only ordered brakes once before, and that was for my other car. it was much easier for that lol.. just found a Hawk vendor online, placed the order lol.

for the pathfinder, it seems harder. there's too much going on with this truck hehe

Just the pads, the hardware kit is if you bent the crap spring clips or lost a shim.... They are a wee pain in the keister, but not too bad. My biggest aversion to doing the brakes is the 6 dang lug nuts and my current lack of a lift..

It seems counterproductive to reinstall an OEM product after it has shown itself to fail after a few miles. As I needed a tire rotation anyway I had a look at these factory installed front and rear pads which are coming up to 26,000 miles and from measurement are probably good for another 25,000 miles.

Maybe your dealership misinformed you about needing new pads Tutty, wouldn't be the first time a dealership invented 'needed work'. Where is the brake fluid line in relation to the Max and Min lines on your brake system reservoir when the system is cold and have you had any brake fluid added to the system since new.

Tailgating or following too close to the forward vehicle requires more use of brakes. If your brake pads are shot you could try modifying your driving style by leaving more distance from the next vehicle and coasting to a stop more if you want to improve pad life for the next set.
