Front Road Noise

Postby X-4X4R8D » Thu Jan 28, 2010 6:00 am

Not sure how to explain this. But I am going to try my best.

For the past month or so, the Pathy has been making this weird noise with the front wheels. Almost as if it was unbalanced. When you go straight, there is no noise at all. The sound is like a wo wo wo sound during turns. It gets louder at faster speeds. The assumption I took was bad wheel alignment and bad tires. The tires were really bad with cuping in the front. which signified a bad alignment.

So, I got an alignment done. Then went to another place and got a whole new set of tires. The sound is still there. I go back to the shop where I got alignment and have them check it out, again. The read out looks good. But the noise is still there. ugh!

Have any heard about this issue or have read about it. I tried searching for it, no luck.

Do you think it's a wheel bearing issue? Is there a write up any where how to replace the Wheel Bearings?

Thanks

I know I feel the VDC doing wierd things, but I just ignore that cause the manual says VDC will make a slight funny noise, which is normal, in your case kinda hard to diagnose without hearing it, read the manual on the VDC and take it in to dealer to verify. sorry i can't be more help.

Is it loud enough that you can record a clip on your phone and post it up on youtube? That might help identify the noise.

Not a bad idea. I'll get done this weekend and upload it to my Photobucket and hook the link up. Thanks..

If the sound is consistent with tire rotation, meaning if it speeds up and slows down as the vehicle does, and it's only when you turn...I would say bearing. Is it louder in one direction than the other. Go to a parking lot and do some slow sweeping slolam (sp?) turns to see if you can recreate the noise.

You could also have a warped rotor. When was the last time you had your brakes inspected and/or replaced?

Try checking the CV boots..if its only during turning then their most probably the cause for it..ive replaced mine 2twice on another vehicle but none on the pathy..They get worn out, normal wear and tear especially if you do a bit of offroading..

Does the Path have CV boots? I thought those were for front wheel drive vehicles only.

yeh they are mostly found on FWD cars but our pathys are also 4wd that can be driven at speeds upto 100km/h (roughly 62mp/h) on 4Hi,,,if not for CV joints then what transfers the power to the front wheels??

I needed a front drive shaft U-Joint at 57K miles. I felt and heard my noise on the highway when coasting from 65-70 mph.
