Tire chains

Postby husky570 » Thu Oct 28, 2010 5:53 pm

With winter coming on, am curious as to why a 4x4 SUV like the pathfinder has been designed to not run tire chains? Is this legit? Has anybody ran them on their Pathy? Les Schwab sales chains that will fit the tire size. :?

I should clarify, that it is recommended not to run chains on front tires-which seems kinda silly since I always preferred to have my fronts chained most in 4x4 mode. Anybody ran chains on all four with no probs?

I've not run chains but there's not much room up front. If they loosen up a bit you'd have some major damage. A low-profile cable might be ok.

I ran these on my stock tires (265/70 R16) before I went up a size...

Now that I have larger tire, they won't fit. Luckily my new tires are outstanding in the snow and ice and are stud-able.

Icedteasley, where do you have the clearance issues? Is it on the rear tire? I checked around the tire and it looks like there's plenty of clearance. I currently have 265/70/16 BFG A/T but want to run 265/75/16 BFG A/T for the extra 1/2" of lift to add to my 2" lift. However, I need to be able to run chains when I go on ski trips.

My Pathy wears 285/70R16 and I run these when necessary:

There are issues turning as the tire will rub the frame rail on tight turns and the front inner fender liner at other times. But as long as I don't make tight turns nothing rubs. But again, I haven't had to use chains for long distance or time. The tires alone have gotten me through 3ft of standing snow (+whatever sized drifts) in fields from a stand still so I've only had to do it as a test.

@Fossil

I had kinda close tolerances on the front wheels when I was close to full lock. The chains I recommend fit very tight but are pretty burly. Since you have a lift, I can't really say you'll have room for the same chains with 265/75R16 tires. My educated guess is that you won't have problems unless you go off-road. I know the chains I recommend are pricey, but they are the easiest to put on and have a killer warranty.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. I think I should be OK since I never put chains on the front tires. I'm going with the bigger tires and some low clearance chains.
