temperature gauge sometimes works

Our temperature gauge in the cluster sometimes doesn't move at all. It will stay all the way on the cold side, even when the car is hot and has been driven. This seems to happen more often in the summer. In the winter, the gauge will move up to the middle where it should be, but is sometimes glitchy. Any ideas?
