Tach swap

I have a 1994 Nissan pickup with a 4 cylinder 5 speed. It was a basic truck did not even have a radio. I recently installed an instrument cluster out of a 92 Pathfinder which had a v6. The tachometer works erratically. sometimes it does not work at all sometimes it bounces all over. Having read other posts I know that it's fed through the computer. My question is will a tach out of a 6 cylinder work on a 4 cylinder?
