MAF wiring?

hi can anyone tell me about MAF sensor wiring on a 92 pathfinder, i know about the
black/white = 12v
white = 5v sensor \
black = ground / wraped together
but what is the bare wire for and does it connect into anything?
and is there any way to test to see if im getting the right signals and volts ect...
