I had my ball joints and bushing replaced and they disassembled the front wheels and put a new rubber boot on. After re-assembly, the 4x4 does not work but the lever shifts ok and the 4x4 light comes on. No pwer is transferred to the front wheels however.

Is it possible to reassemble the front wheels wrong?

Yes, it's very easy to reassemble incorrectly.

Though it shouldn't have caused any harm. just take it back in and make sure they do it right.
