Gross EVAP leak and gas smell 2001 SE Pathy

Hi All, I have a 2001 manual SE Pathy 4WD that frequently smells like gas and has the Gross EVAP leak code (can't remember number). Took it to a local shop and they say $90 to smoke it and won't nail down a cost to fix it. Not even a ballpark. Could this be $50? $1000? I was told it doesn't affect performance at all, but the smell is a bother especially to my one daughter who already gets car sick as it is.
Questions are: has anyone had this problem? What could it cost? Could I fix this myself?
