why does my transmission shudder at 40 to 50 mph. not under a load ? its a 1999 4 wheel drive

To sum it up, the tranny is a notoriously weak link. Many times the transmission cooler (the bottom of the radiator where the 2 hoses plug in) can form a crack allowing the engine coolant to mix with the tranny fluid. Then it's just a matter of time. But that's not the only reason for failures. Have you checked the fluid level? What color is it? Has it ever been changed? You may very well be at the beginning of the end
