Hi,

I'm new to the forum and have a 2000 Pathfinder LE 4X4 with 250K miles. The engine quit at an intersection and would not start. I had it towed home and after setting a couple days it started right up but after a little while it began sputtering and misfiring and then the engine quit. A mechanic told me it was most likely the fuel pump so I went ahead and replaced it. After replacing the fuel pump the engine started and ran fine for a little while and then started sputtering and mis-firing again. When I raised the hood there was smoke or steam coming from the manifold area. Anybody have any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Had the same thing happen to me on my 1999. I ended up replacing the fuel pump, dist cap and rotor plugs (except #@6, I couldn't reach it) and plug wires. Had a mechanic replace injector #4 and plug #6. Just make sure you have the EGR valve cleaned or replaced when you get the injectors done (if they need it).

Had to replace the knock sensor also.

Thanks for the reply and info. Have been away for a week so haven't had time to troubleshoot any. I'll start with the items you mentioned.

You should always confirm fuel pressure before replacing a fuel pump, or any other fuel system component. An auto parts store with a loaner program should have a fuel pressure tester if you don't have one.
If it stalls out, it could be due to a lack of fuel or a lack of spark or even a lean condition. Worn spark plugs or bad spark plug cables can also cause this. Lack of spark issues is often caused by bad distributors on these vehicles. The fact that you have steam or smoke coming from the intake would concern me. Possible a coolant hose under the intake plenum is leaking?

Replacing the distributor solved the issue, thanks again for the replies.

Did you go with a stock Nissan unit or aftermarket brand?
