I have purchased both long and short oil filters and still do not have the right answer as to which one is better for my pathy 2003 vq35de engine AT ,
wheel DR. I wrote to a parts place this is a copy maybe someone out there can let me know which filter I should use long or short they both fit and work? either -9EO1A OR THE 65FOE

Here's the skinny: the shorter filter was developed when they started putting oil coolers on the VQ engine. Those that didn't have the oil cooler, had the longer filter. But, once those vehicles with the oil coolers started hitting the dealer for service, techs realized that the longer filters would work on the engines with the oil coolers, so, like most technicians would think, larger filter means more oil capacity which is a good thing, in theory. GM has the same thing with some of it's vehicles, like those 4.3L Blazers with the remote oil filter adapter near the front of the vehicle; you can use either the short or long filter on those, as well.
Bottom line, I don't think either one is "more efficient" than the other, although, the longer filter does give you a little more filtering media and a slightly larger oil capacity---maybe half of a pint. It's nothing to rack your brain over. If it were mine, I'd probably use the longer one if there is no interference with anything due to the extra length (and there shouldn't be on your vehicle).

Thank you so much , you know its funny that I don't have a problem with installing either long or short filter, however I do think I have an oil cooler.

You probably do have an oil cooler and it probably came with the short filter from the factory. Like I said, it doesn't really matter which one you use as either will work. Just remember the longer filter will require a little bit more oil.

Yes when I do my oil changes ,I check the dip stick and always make sure its right on the full mark and not over filled.
