Is 12-15 Xterra worthy replacement for my 03 LE 4WD?

I had 99 LE for 15 years from new. My current 03 LE I bought in 06 runs like new, but both rear quarters rusting away all around the wheel wells.
Thinking about starting to look for a late model Xterra Pro-4X to replace her in the near future.
Are these trucks still as reliable?
Is the 4.0 v6 as trouble free as my old 3.3 was and my 3.5 is?
Any known issues?
Tks.

Yes, Yes and No for the model years you are asking about.

I own both a 2nd gen Xterra and a 2012 Pathfinder (same 4.0L engine but a little bit richer in the interior)

The XTerra exterior has aged exceedingly well though.

I believe both a 2nd gen Xterra and a R51 (05-12) Pathfinder will be fine replacements.

For 05-10 model years replace radiator the day you buy them (if it hasnt been done already.. search for "SMOD" on this forum)

The 2011-and-later Xterras are pretty good vehicles. They are beyond the years that had some issues with timing chains and radiators (2005-2010). The VQ40DE is in the same engine family as the VQ35DE in the 2003 and I would say even better. It is a very different riding vehicle due to its body-on-frame construction, unlike the unibody chassis used in the R50's. Road test one; I think you'll like it.

Thanks. The only perceived quality argument might be the R50 PF were made in Japan, the late Xterra in the US.......
not sure its valid anymore.

Certainly, per my local Subaru dealer even now the Forester(Japan) has less quality issues than the Outback (US)

Even tho I like 'em both, one might argue that the R51 is a better value than the Xterra.

Reason is they both book the same money as used vehicles for year/milage/condition even though the R51 has a more upscale interior, a more advanced rear suspension and was several thousand $$ more new.

The R51 also handles way better than any body on frame truck has a right to, IMHO it drives as well or better, than some unibody passenger cars I've owned.

... the R51 is a LOT of SUV for the used car money..

Which is explains that a active forum like this still exists for the R51, lot of folks just love 'em..

However I think the XTerras exterior looks more exciting and has aged very well.

I own both.

Biggest advantage of an R51 is if you need a third row seat for kids. I'm not so sure the rear suspension is necessarily "better" than the Xterra's in it's stock form; it all depends on what you are planning to do with it. If you are looking for a more comfortable ride, the R51's suspension would probably be better if it weren't for the too weak coil springs. Replace them with Moog stock replacements or install Airlift 1000 air bags and it's a lot better. If you plan on doing a suspension lift or going off-road, the straight axle suspension of the Xterra would made more sense. The interior in the Pathfinder is a little better, IMO. If you prefer a manual transmission, the Xterra is the only option.
