The screws that hold on the OEM roof rack tracks on my R50 SE are one-way clockwise-only Phillips-head screws.

They resemble the screws used in bathroom stalls to prevent disassembly.

How in heavens name do I back them off?

A couple of ways. Cut a slot in the head and use a flat head.

Jb weld a nut to them.

Borrow a tap and dye kit from an auto parts store

Use a reverse thread bit.

Cut a slot or attach a welded rod!

Both very interesting and not terribly intuitive answers.

Thank you!

The methods are similar to how you would remove a bolt or screw which has been rounded out.

I would try an impact driver, one of those tools that twist a little when you hit the back of it with a hammer. Doesn't matter if you ruin the screw head since you're not going back with them.
