Rear seat is stuck & will not releast

Hello We have a 2002 Pathfinder, not sure of the model. There are 2 rear seats that can be released via a lever, at low level on each seat. On the LHS seat it works a treat, pull the lever & the seat will lift up. Its the RHS we have a problem with pull the lever & the mechanism will not release. I manage to remove the cover as best i could, where the lever is located & got a pair of long nose pliers on the cable that activates the mechanism, pulled as hard as i could but with no joy. The problem i can see, you need to get the seat to lift up so you can remove the plastic cover to investigate why it is not working! Any ideals?
