97 monitor problem

Hey guys, new member here. Just picked up a 97 for my girlfriend and I'm having a serious issue with the engine monitors. We live in California and need to pass smog to register it. It passes with flying colors on all the tests, except the monitor readiness. Wish I'd known this is a common problem with this year, before buying it.
We've been driving it around in all sorts of conditions for weeks. I've tried the specific driving pattern outlined by Nissan, specifically for this year and model. Twice. Still won't ready the monitor.
Can anyone give me any other ideas? I'm at my wits end and really close to just selling it.
