CEL...again

It's that time of year and I have to get emissions checked. Car runs fine, but my CEL light has come on so I have to make it go away before I can pass emissions. I have battled this before and the issues are similar. 2001 3.5 with 222k.

First set of codes was P0325 and P1135. Reset and got an oil change because it has been over a year since the last one (the car doesn't drive very far and has only been 4k miles). After the oil change CEL comes back with P0325 only. Clear again and drive a couples days and now I have P0325, P1140 and P0140.

Test sensors first?

What is the word on relocating the knock sensor? do we like that project? I saw a video where one guy moved it to the front of the engine. It seemed like a good idea. I know I don't want to dig the manifold off there.

I guess not a lot of traffic in this location anymore.

Wes, I am sorry you have not been helped yet.. But Iits only been one day and this is not an easy question.. our main expert is pulling lots of extra hours at work right now and yes the R50 is now a bit of a niche car too..

Hi PalmerWMD - sorry if that read as a complaint. It was more of a forlorn "there's just not many of us around anymore" comment as there are fewer and fewer R50's are around and we fade into the sunset. There is no complaining allowed when asking for free advice.

No problem :)
smjs lessened time available to us here is felt since he is the one with the answers as my expertise is much less than his.
He promised he still comes on when he can, just not as much as prior based on extra work commitments he currently has.
I hope we can help you with your issue soon 8)

I checked P1140 online and I was wondering if you CEL issue is due to dirt. It’s a long shot, but maybe, just maybe the fix to your problem is the same as mine above. Try some Marvel Mystery Oil. After all, MMO is basically a solvent. It may clean out whatever crud is causing the valve to be stuck.

I found this for P1140: Since the Intake valve timing control solenoid valve uses oil flow to control timing, dirty oil can cause the valve to stuck open or closed.

Good luck,
C

The P0325 is a knock code and it's common for it to persist on older Nissans even when the knocks are brand new. It won't light the MIL and I wouldn't worry about it. If you have the top off the engine at some point, just replace the knocks while you're in there. Or you can relocate, that works fine.

The P0140 may be a result of your IVT issues, so I'd go after that last. The VQ35's are Miller-cycle engines and IVT codes will prevent the ECM from running the cam phasers for Miller-cycling. That can in turn fool the ECM into thinking there's a problem with a cat or sensor. So resolve the P1135/P1140 first, then worry about the O2 sensor code if it persists.

The P1135 is usually a "sludge code" while the P1140 usually indicates a bad sensor, so your oil change may well have cured the former. Check your passenger side cam sensor for crud or magnetic debris, and try swapping the driver/passenger sensors. If the P1140 (right) turns into a P1145 (left), the sensor is bad.

You're still the font of old school Nissan wisdom, but yah -- to the extent possible, I got your back! :D
