Check Engine Light

I have a 1999 Pathfinder XE with 3.3 V6. The check engine light has been coming on intermittently for a while. I cleared the code (EVAP) but it comes back in a few days. Just got a letter in the mail that I need to get emissions tested and I'm afraid I won't pass. This is my son's car that he uses for college. Is there a way to re-set the computer so the code is cleared completely, not just temporarily. I don't need an expensive repair right now.
Just need to pass test and get 1 more year out of her.
